Blog:How to Clean and Care for Your Glasses
Caring for and keeping your eyeglasses clean requires following a few simple rules. Most rules are common sense, but by following them consistently, your eyeglasses may remain in excellent condition for years. If you live in or near Magnolia, TX, or Houston, TX, and are looking for an optometrist near you, consider contacting our Vision Source team.
An effective way to clean your glasses is to rinse them with warm water and dish soap. It is best to wash your hands before rinsing your eyeglasses with warm water. Then, put a drop of dish soap on each lens and gently scrub the lenses and frames with your fingers. Rinse thoroughly, let them air dry, or use a microfiber or lint-free cloth.
Do not clean your lenses when they are dry. Use water; otherwise, the accumulated grease and dirt can scratch the lens surface.
Besides the weekly cleaning, clean your glasses with lint-free cloths you launder regularly. Paper or cloth towels, paper tissues, and articles of clothing might not be proper eyeglass cleaners- they may create micro scratches that increase in number and size over time.
When removing your glasses, set them down with the lens side up. When carrying your glasses in a purse, backpack, or pocket, place them in a protective case or sleeve so they are not scratched. The protective case you receive with your glasses provides good mechanical protection in most cases.
Spray bottles of eyeglass cleaning solution and microfiber cloth can be effective cleaners when you are on the go. Alternatively, small refillable dish soap bottles work well when you can access fresh water.
